You know what I love about this post?
A) It is immensely informational, concise, and helpful.
b) It subtly addresses an issue absent from too many photojournalists and the larger creative community - the establishing of RELATIONSHIPS with the community inside the camera frame that are often perceived only as content.

Thank you for this again.

Assalamu'alaikum and bravo for such eloquent sharing!

As a Muslim living in Malaysia, I have never had to deal with such issues regarding my identity and am amazed at the spectrum of experience out there.

What ever people may say about Islam, know that being a Muslim transcends ethnicity, culture, nationality and language. You may shape it the way you feel is right, as long as it is in line with the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad SAW.

Do not let others make you feel bad because you are not a Muslim out of their mold, for Allah SWT shapes us all in our different forms and norms, and He loves us as our fitrah dictates.

Salam=)

This is my first time reading your blog, and I'm surprised to stumble across such an article.

What amazes me is how some people just love to define others, 'you're this and that', 'you're this, so you just can't be that', and so on. As a Frenchswomen of Mauritanian descent, I see myself in the same predicament as you.

I know the village my parents and grandparents are from, the type of food we eat, the type of clothing we wear- I even mastered the melhafas, and this is no small thing! But I'm seen as this outsider, 'the girl who tries to be like us' and have to prove my love of West Africa. I'm asked to enumerate the traditional dishes I can cook, and the families that are kins to ours, the casts they're from. Even if I pass the test, they still won't accept me.

Same problem with the French 'natives'. I'm the foreigner, darker skin, unusual name, different clothing, and what's up with that thing on her head?! Here again, I have to justify my 'Frenchness' and answer all kinds of crazy questions.

So, I don't really know where I belong. I apologize for the rambling, your text is very moving, and it just mirrors the situation I find myself in. At least, I'm sure of two things: a. I'm a Muslim b. Allah SWT could care less whether I feel closer to my Mauritanian folks or the French.

Salams,
Dieynaba

P.S.: You look great in traditional Mauritanian clothing=)
